Unity Game (Player 1 Character)

For our game, we are using two characters, one which is going to use a grappling hook and another to be a stealthy character. My first design was aimed for the grappling hook character, which we all decided to also … Continue reading

Sunderland College 3D Modelling, Rocks.

As part of the 3D Model environment, I have modelled different variations and sizes of rocks to be used within the game.

The rocks are made of a basic box shape, and then the vertices are edited into random places, giving it more of a rock look. Once this is done, the edges are then manipulated as well before the Mesh Smooth modifier is added.

After the smooth modifier is applied, the rock is a lot more rounder, but to give it that slight sharp look, I have added the noise modifier onto the model as well, adding 10cm of noise in each direction before applying the texture.

3D UV Wrapping and Mapping

Using Photoshop, I have made a 3D UV Map, which is to be used as a test when texturing models.

TEXTURE TEST UV MAP

By using a Test Texture map, this will enable me to check to see if the texture works, and where it goes wrong. For example, if it goes on backwards in places, is distorted or in the incorrect place. Instead of using the correct texture for the model straight away, we use this test texture in order to see if there are any problems and where they are occurring.

Once in 3DS Max, I followed the tutorial to make the UV Unwrap. This is similar to a cereal box being unfolded. Once unfolded, we are able to add a texture to each side of the model.

This image shows the UV Unwrap that I have created for my wall piece, which once the UV Test map is added on, it looks like this:

Modular Asset Creation within a Game

What is Modular Asset Creation? Modular assets are models that can be duplicated over and over, but remain seamless. It is important to make modular assets so that the Environment artists don’t have to create multiple models over and over … Continue reading
